Uganda bets on AI and digital infrastructure in push for $500bn economy
Uganda has identified artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure investment as central pillars of its drive to grow the economy to $500 billion, officials said at the country’s 3rd National ICT Summit in Kampala.
The summit, organised by the ICT Association of Uganda (ICTAU), was opened by ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba, representing President Yoweri Museveni. Discussions centred on how ICT can drive productivity, innovation, value addition and market expansion across the economy, as the country pursues what officials have termed a 10X growth trajectory.
Lumumba called on Uganda to develop home-grown digital solutions and widen opportunities for citizens to participate directly in innovation, rather than rely on imported technology alone.
The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT), which took part in the summit, said its involvement reinforced a broader push to build a digitally skilled, industry-ready workforce capable of supporting the country’s economic transformation goals. UICT added that the summit created a platform for dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders across Uganda’s ICT ecosystem.
No specific investment figures or project timelines were announced at the summit, though officials indicated further details on AI and infrastructure funding would follow in subsequent policy announcements.
