NFSU Uganda unveils rapid DNA testing for investigators
The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) Uganda Campus has unveiled rapid DNA testing capacity, giving investigators a way to get results in real time in criminal cases and disaster victim identification.
The technology was showcased at the campus’s pioneer graduation events, held in partnership with ThermoFisher Scientific HID. The university hosted a two-day rapid DNA workshop on 16 and 17 September, which the UPDF said was the first of its kind in Africa.
The workshop covered statistical probability, DNA mixture interpretation and the use of advanced forensic software. Participants came from across East Africa, including members of the police and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
The university also held a “Capture the Flag” competition in cyber security and digital forensics to showcase students’ skills in tackling digital threats.
NFSU Director Air Commodore K.R. Thaakar said forensic science exists to establish the truth through scientific evidence.
“DNA has become a global standard. Whether it is paternity disputes, sexual assault cases, or murder investigations, in every situation we are looking for the truth,” he said.
The Uganda Police Force’s Director of Forensic Science, Assistant Commissioner of Police Andrew Mubiru, said DNA evidence matters most where credible eyewitnesses are missing.
“In many instances an offence can be committed without credible eyewitnesses. In that case you have to rely on scientific techniques. DNA analysis is key in linking suspects to crime scenes, especially in cases of rape, defilement, and murder,” he said.
Mr Mubiru said such techniques are vital to strengthening prosecutions and ensuring justice in court.
He added that the training benefits participants from across East Africa, not only Ugandan students.
